In Vitro Mycocidal Response of Croton Bonplandianum Baill. Leaves Extract

The present work highlights the mycocidal response of chloroform, acetone and methanol extract of Croton bonplandianum leaves. The mycocidal activity of the extract was than assessed using well agar and paper disc diffusion techniques against human pathogenic fungi such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum fulvum, Candida albicans and Aspergillus flavus. The antifungal test results revealed that the chloroform extract showed zones of inhibition ranging from 10-32.2 mm with maximum activity against T. mentagrophytes followed by M. fulvum. Acetone and methanol extracts were also effective against dermatophytes but C. albicans and A. flavus were less sensitive to the methanol extract. The results obtained here are very important to establish the chloroform fractions of the Croton bonplandianum, as promising plant from which a new phytotherapeautic agent against dermatophytes can be developed.
