Morpho-taxonomical and karyological study of Gopi banana: an indigenous palatable cultivated variety of Musa × paradisiaca


Abstract:

Tripura has a good grasp of edible cultivated bananas which are yet to be treated on scientific grounds. Amongst them, one is locally named as ‘Gopi Kola’ which has been domesticated by the farmers due to its good vigor and yield. However, the technical identity of the Musa variety Gopi is indistinct. The present investigation addresses the identification and documentation of Musa variety Gopi in the perspectives of morphology and cytology. Systematic morphological screening and cytological analysis produced relevant results in decoding its taxonomical position. The taxonomical scorecard method reveals a score of 61 according to which the genome based grouping is ABB for the variety. Analysis of morphological traits showing concurrence with both the ancestral species also signifies its hybrid nature. Chief distinguishing features of the cultivated variety Gopi include shiny pseudostem with light blotches, light waxy nature of male bud, thick finger peel and sweet fleshy pulp with occasional presence of few soft seeds mostly at the upper portion of the finger. Cytological results implying 2n = 3x = 33 chromosome count also adds to the triploidy of the cultivar. Karyotype is symmetrical belonging to Stebbins 2A category and is characterized by prevalence of median and submedian chromosomes with three secondary constricted chromosomes. On account of revelations in the present study, the identity of Musa cultivar Gopi is designated as Musa × paradisiaca L. ‘Gopi’.
