Dr. Sumit Purohit is presently serving as the Scientist Incharge, Regional Centre Patwadangar, Nainintal, Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology (Department of Agriculture, Government of Uttarakhand), Biotech Bhawan, Haldi, Pantnagar, U. S. Nagar.
During his PhD from G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment & Sustainable Development, Almora, Uttarakhand, he worked on the Propagation studies and genetic variability in Zanthoxylum armatum in Uttarakhand with his expertise on study related to plant tissue culture, plant genetic diversity/ biodiversity analysis, molecular biology and published many research papers in peer-reviewed journals besides book chapters. Dr. Purohit established plant tissue culture protocols for many medicinal and aromatic plants namely Zanthoxylum armatum, Valeriana jatamansi. Amomum subulatum, Actinidia deliciosa (kiwi). He worked extensively on commercial hydroponic and soil less farming for large scale crop production.
Dr Sumit has recently been conferred the Fellow Award (FSPR)-2024 by the prestigious Society for Plant Research (SPR) during National Conference on Future of Agriculture and Agriculture for Future: Indian Perspective held on 4-6 September, 2023 at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science & Technology, Shalimar. He has also been conferred with Green Technology Innovative Award 2023 by the National Environmental Science Academy, (NESA) at CSIR-NBRI, Lucknow besides many other recognitions likeUttarakhand Ratan award 2018, Uttarakhand Young scientist award 2011 etc.
Dr Purohit has 3 patents to his credit and has successfully completed 5 research projects as PI and 4 as Co-PI. Dr Sumit visited USA for presenting his research in an international conference during 2015. He is life member of many prestigious societies like Indian Science Congress, National Environmental Science Academy and the Society for Plant Research (Vegetos).
