Abstract

Salinity is one of the major stresses limiting crop productivity and food demand of increasing world population. A total of thirty organisms were isolated from salinity affected soil and all the organisms showed 4% while SH17 showed 8% salinity tolerance. However isolate SH17 was excellent for expression of plant growth promoting activities such as ACC (1-aminocyclopropane 1 carboxylate) deaminase, phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, IAA (Indole acetic acid) and exopolysaccharides synthesis. To evaluate effect of SH 17 in mitigation of salinity stress, pot study was done. The salinity stress of 100 and 200 mM has aggravated length, weight, chlorophyll content and lipid peroxidation of Triticum aestivum. Inoculation of salinity stressed plants by multifarious plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) SH17 (Bacillus pumillus strain RMS) significantly improved shoot and root length, fresh and dry weight, chlorophyll content and protected the plant against oxidative damages. The present study highlights the greener approach for reclamation of salinity stressed soil and improving crop productivity using indigenous organism.
