Phenolic acids, Rhizhoctonia solani, antifungal activity.
Phenolics are aromatic compounds produced by plants generally for the protection against stress. Phenolic compounds can be used as antimicrobial agents against some microbes resistant to commercial antibiotics. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the effect of vanillin, vanillic acid, ferulic acid and a combination of vanillic acid + ferulic acid on the growth and development of Rhizoctonia solani.
These phenolics were tested in-vitro on growth and development of R. solani using poisoned food techniques at different concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 ppm along with negative and positive control in three replications. Results revealed that test chemicals inhibited fungal growth by 31–100 per cent. The performance of vanillin was best with 57.5–100% inhibition at 10–100 ppm conc and growth inhibition by ferulic acid was 100 and 58.25% at 100 and 50 ppm, respectively. However, the percent growth inhibition by vanillic acid was 75% at 100 ppm and vanillic acid + ferulic acid (50: 50) at100 ppm inhibits 66.67% growth and development of R. solani.
These phenolics can be utilized in development of new generation pesticides like phenolic acid amides for being economical and effective against fungal pathogens.
