Abstract

This study aimed to explore the chemical composition and pharmacological potential of extracts obtained from the leaves and stems of Dendrobium jenkinsii Wall. ex Lindl., an understudied and uncommon epiphytic orchid using methanol as solvent. The extracted materials were examined for phytochemical constituents using quantitative methods, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis, and assessment of their antioxidant potential was performed by employing DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging techniques. The stem extract demonstrated a greater quantity of TPC (61.83 ± 6.96 GAE mg/g) and TTC (109 ± 5.2 GAE mg/g) compared to the leaf extract. Conversely, the leaf extract showed a greater amount of TFC (33.19 ± 1.13 QE mg/g). The stem methanolic extract demonstrated superior free radical scavenging ability with IC50 values of 112.39 µg/ml in the DPPH assay and 19.20 µg/ml in the ABTS assay compared to the leaf extract. Furthermore, GC–MS analysis unveiled a diverse array of biologically active compounds within the stem and leaf methanolic extract of D. jenkinsii. The research findings highlight the potential of D. jenkinsii as a valuable reservoir of phytocompounds showcasing its promising medicinal properties.
