Abstract

Vegetables are known to be the richest and most convenient source of nutrients and quality produce. As per the current status of the world population, a primary goal is to achieve quality produce for the increasing population. Climate change has become a significant threat to vegetable production. Abiotic stresses significantly affect various aspects of plant growth and development, which also disturb the signaling pathways and resistance abilities of crops. Several conventional and non-conventional approaches have been employed to determine relevant solutions for addressing this problem and mitigating these stresses. Furthermore, these new modern approaches have broadened the number of opportunities that not only hasten the process but also revive the plant in a short period. A new class of phytohormones provides an approachable mechanism to combat various environmental stresses, which work on different levels in the plants, such as physiological, morphological, molecular, and biochemical. These phytohormones help target stress-related genes and transcription factors that are involved in signaling pathways. In this review article, the hazardous effects of abiotic stresses on vegetable crops and their mitigation via the use of phytochromes, along with their properties, have been discussed in detail. However, it also highlights the further research gaps that need to be studied to solve the unclear pattern of hormonal-mediated stress tolerance interaction with crop plants.
