Abstract

Impatiens balsamina L. is a medical plant often utilized for antimicrobial, antirheumatic, antipruritic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antitumor properties. Bioactive compounds and biological activity in medicinal plants can depend on several factors including growing conditions. Fusing FTIR and UV–Vis spectra data with chemometrics is an option to classify the leaf extracts I. balsamina based on differences in growth locations. The locations were classified based on differences in altitude, namely Bengkulu City (8–14 masl and coastal areas) and Rejang Lebong District (640–1091 masl and mountainous characteristics). The measurement of the FTIR spectrum was performed in the range of 600–4000 cm−1 while that of the UV–Vis spectrum was conducted at a wavelength of 200–800 nm. The leaf extracts of I. balsamina taken from different growth locations had similar UV–Vis and FTIR absorptions, the only difference occured in the absorption intensity. Classification with PCA was performed to classify and discriminate the data. The total PC value of the 2D PC1 and PC2 of 96% and that of the 3D PC1, PC2, and PC3 of 98% showed that there was a good classification of the leaf extracts I. balsamina. It was also supported by the different yield values of the resulting extracts based on the growth locations, 31.93% ± 1.975 and 27.01% ± 1.271 for Bengkulu City and Rejang Lebong District, successively. It indicates that the fusion of FTIR and UV–Vis spectra data combined with chemometrics can be utilized to classify the leaf extracts of I. balsamina obtained from two different growth locations in Bengkulu Province.
