Abstract

Euphorbia hirta Linn. is medicinal plant and has established its sedative, anxiolytic, analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant for blood pressure, antihypertensive and antioxidant activities. Euphorbia hirta Linn. was collected from Ranchi, Jharkhand, India, shade-dried and extracted with different solvents - methanol, ethanol and aqueous. The extracts were tested for their antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus using agar disc diffusion method. Extract from leaf or bud of Euphorbia hirta using methanol showed maximum in vitro inhibition zone on test bacteria S. aureus which offered inhibition zone of 20 mm and zone of inhibition area of 471.00 mm2, while the stem or bud extract of Euphorbia hirta using aqueous or ethanol showed significant inhibition against gram-positive bacteria S. aureus. A significant inhibition of 15 mm was obtained in ethanol extract and 13 mm in aqueous extract of Euphorbia hirta against S. aureus
