Abstract

An investigation was carried out during December-January, 2022, to determine the effective pre-sowing treatment for seed germination of Alseodaphnopsis petiolaris (Meisn.), a valuable tree species of the Lauraceae family. It has durable reddish-brown wood used in construction, with elliptic leaves and flowers from September to December. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) in nursery conditions, subjected to 16 pre-treatments with four replications each. Which include seeds soaked in ambient temperature for 24 h, seeds soaked in luke warm water and left cooling for 24 h, seeds soaked in three different concentrations (2%, 4%, 6%) of H2So4 for 12 h, seeds dipped in GA3 (250, 500, 100 ppm) for 12 h, seeds dipped in three different concentration (200 ppm, 400 ppm, 600 ppm) of IBA for 30 min, seeds dipped in Aloe vera pulp extract (25% and 50%) for 24 h, seeds dipped in Moringa bark extract (25% and 50%) for 24 h. Various germination parameters such as germination percentage, peak value, germination value and energy period were observed. Among various treatments, seeds dipped in 600 ppm IBA for 30 min (T12) resulted in higher germination (82.25%), as compared with 9% for the control treatment. The findings indicate that application of the IBA considerably enhanced germination for the production of seedlings with minimum time for reforestation and afforestation programmes of the species. The experiment was likewise conducted in CRD with 14 treatments and 3 replications each for seedling performance under different potting media. After every 30 days from May to August 2022, the seedlings' height, root length, collar diameter, number of leaves, number of branches, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, root/shoot ratio, root spread, and biomass were recorded based on their growth performance. T5—Soil + Compost + Sand at a ratio of 2:1:1 was found to be the best among all other treatment circumstances, even though other treatments too have made a successful contribution in relation to the growth parameters of the seedlings.
