Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of in-situ moisture conservation techniques and planting methods on soil moisture content, grain yield and biomass yield of sorghum. A factorial combination of treatments was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main effects of planting methods and mulches were highly significant (p < 0.01) in influencing grain and biomass yields. Averaged over planting methods, sorghum planted using in-situ water harvesting with furrow planting produced significantly more grain (2237 kg/ha) than planting on top of ridges (1597 kg/ha) and flat planting (1128 kg/ha). Furthermore, sorghum planted in furrows and on top of ridges increased grain yield by 98.3% and 41.6% and biomass yield by 68.5% and 35.7% compared to flat planting, respectively. Application of 6 t/ha and 3 t/ha of mulch increased grain yield by 25.9% and 14.4% and biomass yield by 23.1% and 18.9%, respectively over the bare plots. Regarding soil moisture dynamics, the highest volumetric soil water content (VSWC) was obtained in tied-ridges (19.17%), followed by open ridges (17.65%) over flat tillage (14.4%). Similarly, VSWC was significantly higher under furrow planting (20.57%), followed by on ridge planting (16.25%) and lowest in flatbed planting (14.4%). Soils covered with 3 and 6 t/ha of mulch showed higher VSWC than plots without mulch. Therefore, the results suggest that in areas like Alamata, combining tied ridges with furrow planting and applying 6 t/h mulch is the most effective strategy for conserving soil moisture and enhancing grain and biomass yields of sorghum.
