Abstract


Spirulina (Arthrospira) has been the focus of extreme investigation as it contains array of bioactive chemicals and has emerged as a perfect nutraceutical. Spirulina has a unique blend of around 70 biologically active compounds making it a perfect nutraceutical. Its supplementation enhances the nutritional and therapeutic significance. Its role as antiinflammatory, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-hypercholesterimic effect and anti-diabetic has been critically appraised. In addition, its safety profile has also been discussed. Based on animal evidence, Spirulina appears to be a promising anti-oxidant and supplement for metabolic issues. Universal medical research has marked Spirulina as unique blend of nutrients possessing biomodulatory and immunoprotective properties. It inhibits carcinogenesis due to antioxidant properties and is known to reduce hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The focus of current review is tremendous nutritive, pharmaceutical and public health potential of Spirulina.
