Keywords: Physiological aspects, Biochemical processes, Molecular mechanisms, Seed longevity, Ageing-related changes
Seed ageing, a complex phenomenon influenced by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors, has been the subject of extensive research due to its significant implications for agriculture, conservation, and biodiversity. The objective of this review is to focus on modern non- destructive and non-invasive methods of evaluating seed ageing along with providing an extensive overview of the molecular, physiological, and biochemical components involved in seed ageing. The physiological changes are influenced by factors such as temperature, humidity, and oxygen levels results alterations in germination potential, vigour, and overall seed performance. At the biochemical level, the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, and changes in enzymatic activities play pivotal roles in seed ageing. Antioxidant defence mechanisms, repair systems, and metabolic pathways are integral components of the biochemical responses that impact seed viability and longevity. Recent advancements in molecular biology have provided insight into the genetic and molecular basis of seed ageing. Transcriptomic and proteomic studies have identified key genes and proteins associated with ageing-related pathways, offering potential targets for genetic engineering and breeding programs aimed at developing seeds with improved resistance to ageing. Overall, this review synthesizes current knowledge from diverse scientific disciplines to provide a holistic understanding of seed ageing. Insights into the interconnected physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes will contribute to the development of effective strategies for seed preservation, ensuring sustainable agriculture, and safeguarding plant genetic resources for future generations.
