Abstract


Eclipta prostrata (L.) L. is now emerging as an economically valuable crop due to its utilization in the preparation of a wide array of industrial products. Availability of sufficient quantity of quality planting material of Eclipta can encourage its wide spread cultivation and production of desired plant raw materials for drug preparation by the pharmaceutical industries. Hence development of an optimized rapid micropropagation technology is essential to ensure the bulk production of ready to grow Eclipta plantlets.

In this context the present study was initiated to develop an indirect organogenesis protocol for Eclipta prostrata. Stem explants were ideal to initiate callusing and further shoot regeneration when callus is transferred to MS media containing BAP (5mgl−1). MS+IBA (0.4mgl−1) initiated maximum roots. The plantlets were transferred for hardening in 1: 3 proportion of soil-soilrite and acclimatized in earthern pots containing garden soil and farmyard manure showed 100% survival in the field. A successful protocol for indirect organogenesis in E. prostrata was developed that provides an efficient system for propagation of this valuable medicinal plant in large scale.
