Integrative study on Meizotropis pellita (Hook. f. ex Prain): phytochemistry, antibacterial potential, molecular insights, biological applications, and conservation strategies of a critically endangered Himalayan endemic plant

Abstract


Medicinal plants are essential for providing raw materials for lifesaving drugs, with a significant portion of the global population relying on herbal medicines for primary healthcare. The Indian Himalaya, part of the Himalayan Global Biodiversity Hotspot, is rich in flora, including many medicinal species. Among these, Meizotropis pellita, a critically endangered species endemic to Uttarakhand, holds significant medicinal potential but is threatened by habitat loss, overexploitation, fires, pests, and climate change. This manuscript examines the conservation status of M. pellita, identifies the key factors contributing to its decline, and proposes strategies for its preservation in the region. Being highly medicinal in nature, the crude extracts demonstrated strong antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus and the methanolic extract demonstrated strong action against Bacillus subtilis in the leaves. The root sections of plants show total phenolics, ABTS and DPPH antioxidant activity, and FRAP activity. Plant leaf sections contain high levels of flavonoids and tannins. The review discusses in vitro propagation techniques, the plant’s pharmacological properties, phytochemical composition, unique morphology, distribution and the various other threats. The urgent need for comprehensive research, ex-situ conservation measures and community involvement in conservation efforts is emphasised to protect this valuable species from extinction.
