Abstract

Algae being already reported to be a pigment and growth enhancers for many ornamental fishes hence a preliminary investigation on algal accrual in the ornamental fish rearing tanks was done. Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda were found to be most dominant in the fish tanks. Thus to develop a better understanding of these two algae they were isolated and screened for their growth performance in culture media along with their biochemical and pigment profile. A comparative account on the arrival of certain algal species and the physicochemical characteristics of water in the fish rearing tanks in which the algae were thriving has also been analyzed.
