Karyotype Analysis and Influence of Heavy Metal Lead Acetate in Capsicum

Abstract


Capsicum L. also known as peppers is a genus of flowering plants in Nightshade family Solanaceae. The generic name might have come from Latin word ‘capsa’ which means ‘box’. The ideal growing condition for pepper is sunny and warm loamy soil, ideally 21°C to 29°C. Peppers are highly nutritious, having more Vitamin ‘C’. Capsaicin which is present in capsicum, is used in modern medicine in tropical medication as analgesic.

The diploid chromosome number of Capsicum L. was 2n=2x=24. Higher chromatin length was recorded in Capsicum frutescens which is 41.60μ while lower chromatin length was 33.80μ in Capsicum annum var. green. Higher S.I value was found in Capsicum frutescens which is 65.74μ, while lower S.I value was observed in Capsicum annum var. green which is 65.52μ. Likewise higher Gradient Index (G.I) was found in Capsicum frutescens which is 65.74μ while lower G.I value was found in Capsicum annum var.green which is 39.47μ.

Effect of heavy metals Lead acetate in two species of capsicum were analysed which showed the reduction in the values of mitotic index. It was reported to be 68.57% which is maximum in 0.2% of Lead acetate in Capsicum frutescens while minimum 60% in 1% lead acetate. In Capsicum annum var.green.
