Clitoria ternatea, commonly known as butterfly pea, has been extensively studied for its potential health benefits. This research aimed to review recent advancements and trends in C. ternatea research focused on nutraceutical applications and to outline future research directions. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the “bibliometrix” package in R and Vosviewer®. Scientific manuscripts were retrieved from the Scopus database, covering publications from 2003 to 2022, including original articles, conference papers, data papers, editorials, letters, notes, reviews, and short surveys. The analysis revealed a significant annual growth rate of 22.32% in the number of publications, primarily driven by international collaborative efforts, indicating growing interest in C. ternatea-related research. Keyword co-occurrence analysis identified four main clusters representing key research areas: (1) plant-based traditional medicines, (2) pharmacological properties and medicinal uses of C. ternatea, (3) its potential as a natural colourant and antioxidant source, and (4) its antimicrobial activities. Numerous studies have reported the development of extraction methods and the diverse pharmaceutical properties of C. ternatea, including anti-arthritic, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tussive, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, and anticancer effects. The toxicity assessments have supported its safety for prospective use in natural medicine. Moreover, due to its distinctive anthocyanins-based pigmentation, C. ternatea has been utilized as a natural colourant. Further in-depth studies are required to validate these findings and develop technology for producing stable anthocyanins, thereby expanding its applications. Despite current limitations, this study provides a foundation for future research on C. ternatea in the nutraceutical domain.
