Abstract

Pomelo exhibits significant genetic diversity under semi-arid lateritic belt of West Bengal leads to substantial variation in fruit morphology, biochemical parameters, and presence of bioactive compounds. To evaluate the genetic diversity twenty pomelo accessions from various locations under semi-arid lateritic belt of West Bengal has been collected during August 2021 to December 2022, across three geographical districts (i.e. Birbhum, Bankura, and West Burdwan) of semi-arid lateritic belt of West Bengal (India). Wide variation of fruit length (14.3–25.2 cm), fruit diameter (13.4–22.5 cm), fruit weight (644.3–1458.2 g), pulp weight (435.8–1007.2 g), number of segments, juice content (46.2–67.4 ml/100 g fruit pulp) have also been noted. Moderate to high TSS (7.8-12.3oBrix), considerable amount of total sugar (5.8–7.8%) and reducing sugar (3.1–4.7%) with high TSS-acidity ratio (7.95–15.31) have been found. Richness of the pomelo fruit with respect to bioactive compounds like ascorbate content (26.8–51.6 mg/100 g pulp), antioxidation capacity (27.5–68.9 DPPH IC50), flavonoid content (3.2–8.4 mgRE/g), total phenolics (256.8-442.6 µgGAE/g) and anthocyanin content (5.1–45.1 mg/100 g) have also been observed. Different degrees of correlation among the morphological and biochemical characters as well as bioactive compounds have been noted. Group of pomelo accessions within three major clusters have been observed on the basis of major heterogeneity of fruit weight, pulp weight and total phenolics. Pomelo accession PA 15 was best among the coloured fruits and PA 13 among the non-coloured due to medium bigger size fruit with high quality and significant levels of bioactive compounds. The study revealed the navigation towards identification of superior types and possible way of selection of parents for further crop improvement programme.
