Abstract

Essential oil found in lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) has biological properties like antitumor and anticancer properties; it is grown in recently reclaimed areas of Egypt in order to export leaves that contain essential oil. Unfortunately, the production of lemongrass is impacted by high levels of dissolved salt in the irrigation water in these places. Therefore, present study is merely an effort to lessen the negative impacts of saline irrigation water on lemongrass plants by incorporating banana fruit residue into agricultural soil to help them adapt to salinity stress. Lemongrass plants were subjected to saline irrigation water at 4.3, 42.8, 85.5, and 119.7 mM, either with or without banana fruit residue (20 g kg soil−1). Mass production, total phenols, flavonoids, proline, carbohydrates, protein, and elements (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) as well as essential oil output were all enhanced in plants that were irrigated with saline water and banana fruit residue; while free radical scavenging, sodium and chloride levels were dropped. The components of essential oils changed as a result of treatments with saline irrigation water and banana fruit residue. It can be inferred that adding banana fruit waste to soil that grows lemongrass can lessen the negative effects of saline irrigation water.
