Abstract

Objective of the present study was to investigate the contribution of major biomolecules content in 11 species of freshwater algae (7 cyanophyceae and 4 chlorophyceae) isolated from different habitats of Ranchi district. Isolates belongs to cyanophyceae, were grown in Bold and Besal medium and Godwards medium was used for chlorophycean isolates. Cultured algal mass was sun dried for biochemical analysis. Maximum chlorophyll-a (10.95 mg/g), ?-carotene (1.31 mg/g), total protein (58.28%), total free amino acid (8.95%), total nitrogen (9.32%) and phosphorus content (2.08%) has been estimated in the case of Spirulina platensis, which shows the importance of the genera. Maximum chlorophyll-b (3.30 mg/g), total soluble carbohydrate (11.87%) and total soluble protein (6.48%) have been estimated in another important genera Chlorella vulgaris. Among phycobiliproteins, C-phycocyanin and C-phycoerythrin has been found maximum in Nostoc commune (13.08 mg/g and 6.06 mg/g respectively), while allo-phycocyanin has been found in Synechococcus aeruginosus (1.36 mg/g). Maximum potassium content has been found in the case of Scenedesmus quadricauda (0.98%), while moisture content has been recorded maximum in the case of Nostochopsis lobatus (95.06%). In Jharkhand, morphotaxonomical, cytological and cultural studies of algal specimens had been done by many workers but biochemical analysis of these valuable plants has been done for the first time.
