Abstract

Salai guggal, an oleo-gum resin obtained from Boswellia serrata (commonly known as Indian frankincense, Family: Burseraceae), is known for its immense applicability in anti-asthmatic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-rheumatic, anti-diarrheal, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-microbial, and analgesic activities. The gum resin of this remarkable plant contains an intricate mixture of over 200 bioactive compounds, predominantly featuring terpenoids, polysaccharides, essential oils, and proteins. Boswellic acids, specifically AKBA and KBA types, are the major constituents responsible for its pharmacological activity. In Ayurveda, this drug is prescribed for inflammatory conditions affecting the eyes, gums, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory system. While traditional dosage forms are popular, they present challenges, including inconsistent dosing and fluctuating drug levels in the bloodstream. Furthermore, the therapeutic potential of Salai guggal is hindered by its poor bioavailability and low water solubility. To address these limitations, pharmaceutical research has turned to Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) such as nanoparticles, nanovesicles, guggulosomes, and proniosomal gels. By leveraging NDDS to enhance its bioavailability, Salai guggal could become a more effective therapeutic agent. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of knowledge, uniquely synthesizes recent advancements (2024–2026) in NDDS technologies, and critically evaluates formulation strategies. Furthermore, it outlines the regulatory, standardization, and translational hurdles that must be overcome for widespread clinical application.
