Abstract

Beta-lactam antibiotics constitute the frequently used drugs group of antimicrobials globally. Production of multi drug resistant extended spectrum beta-lactamases (MDR ESBLs) in gram negative bacteria is one of the alarming problems in the world. The aim of current study was to document the prevalence of MDR-ESBLS producing enterobacterial E. coli in stool samples of patients. Stool samples were collected from the different patients of Escorts-Fortis Hospital, Rajasthan (India) under strict aseptic conditions following standard guidelines. Isolated bacteria were submitted to eleven usual antibiotics, using disc diffusion method according to NCCLS criteria, for resistance analysis. Beta-lactamase production of E.coli isolates was determined by phenotypic screening followed by disc diffusion synergy test and double disc diffusion test respectively. Out of 40 isolates, 21 were detected as ESBLs producer E.coli. The most active groups of antibiotics were carbapenems and aminoglycosides. Quinolones were intermediate sensitive for most of the samples. High resistance rates were observed with amoxicillin, ampicillin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
