Abstract

This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis and literature review on using chitosan combined with plant extracts for edible coating as a preservation effort for post-harvest products. In this bibliometric analysis, around 109 articles were obtained from the Scopus database during 2007–2024. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Bibliometrix and VOS Viewer package to show the trend of chitosan-plant extract as an edible coating. The results showed that the annual publication output showed an increasing trend over the study period, although fluctuations were observed with publication output reaching peak in 2022 followed by a decline in subsequent years. Meanwhile, the most corresponding authors coming from India and Spain. The keywords that often appear in the results of this bibliometric analysis are “chitosan”, “plant extract”, “shelf-life”, and “food preservation”. The results of this discussion explained that two important functional properties of chitosan-plant extract relevant to its application as a natural preservative, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Additional research is required to explore the application of chitosan-plant extract in the food industry.
